Liu, a finance practitioner who declined to give her full name, confirmed she eats Japanese food and seafood less frequently than before. College student Zhu Chengtian denied the possible impact on his consumption, as he believes the ingredients would not come from waters with nuclear water discharge. There were also residents who knew little about the issue or never eat Japanese food.
On July 7, China's General Administration of Customs (GAC) issued a statement banning the import of food from ten prefectures in Japan, including Fukushima, and implementing 100 percent inspection of food from other parts of Japan, especially aquatic products. This import restriction was initially issued in 2011, one month after the Fukushima nuclear accident.
However, the public concern over nuclear radiation has spread from food security to other products such as cosmetics. Yao, a college student, told our reporter that she uses quite a few Japanese cosmetic products and is now a bit worried about their dangers, and will consciously reduce her consumption in the future.
Japan received endorsement from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as the wastewater discharge approaches. On July 4, the IAEA issued a report on safety review of the "treated water", claiming it to be in conformity with the international agreed standard and will have a "negligible radiological impact on people and the environment".
After the press release on July 4, a South Korean reporter chased after IAEA Director General Grossi and asked him: "Did you receive 1 million euros from Japan?"
For people in the Pacific island countries and areas, nuclear water discharge could become a fatal strike. Rob Kajiwara, founder of Peace for Okinawa Coalition, said that Luchu's economy heavily depends on mainland Japan where many products come from. "If we just choose to stop buying, how will we live, how will we survive?"
