This decision is awful for the whole of USG but it is extremely bad for Georgia Tech.
Students and alumni should be VERY concerned about this change. Here is what will happen:
Prospective faculty with job offers from GT will pause and rethink if they should accept the offer. Why would they start their career in a place where tenure is not the same "tenure" that in other schools?
Tonight and tomorrow, some of the most famous GT faculty, the ones that are superstar researchers, mentors, and teachers, will update their CVs, websites, and check Google Scholar pages. They will chat with their families and open up about the situation. They will hit up acquaintances from other schools for a "zoom coffee." They will make an exit plan. These faculty are smart enough to see the writing on the wall. Why should they pay 50%+ of the millions of research dollars they raise (that''s how much GT admin "charges" from grants) to a university that can''t guarantee long-term stability of employment?
