a bit afterthought:
i love plain and noisy words. skilled writers could shuffle them as
effortlessly as a dealer in casino did with poker cards, and a grand,
complicated, alive, melodic effect would come out of such simple raw material
strangely. that's the wonder, and always my most favorite style. and i just
realized in my hand they'd fall flat, awkward, or go choppy..

being melodic is not vital. content surpassing the surface/style is.
fictions that read fluently can be trash. but people still enjoy tolkien,
proust etc. because of both their content and musical etc. effect.
"melodic" itself is too narrow to define a good piece of work.

my piece of translation really needs extensive revision esp. to be less
tangled by the original. but i dont think i'd do it. the more i looked
through and revised it, the more mistakes'd appear.

i think, for a good writer, or a sage reader, to seek or to enjoy melodic
effect cant be the motivation for their writing or reading. it's a side
issue. so i cant see how people can judge a work solely based on how the
words flow.
besides is reading a mood thing.. i am always stubborn in my judgement tho
even my impressions of the same work could be erratic..

sigh mood could influence what you picked up and other kinds of things
sometimes. but we also think. at least if i was moody i knew i was moody,
that's my head's functioning the same time; i might choose to do some active
thing instead of passive reading. i cant agree mood is the dominant. it's
just a complicated various case and there can be many factors.

i fu le you! is cognitive science you cup of tea? the "mood" you mentioned
sounds covering a wider range. i was basically phrasing out of common sense:
head and heart, thinking and feeling, sense and sensibility...there are really
such people who are extremely self-controlled and well-planned. maybe becoz
myself was impulsive and thus was always impressed by calm people who were
seldom swayed by mood.

"melodic"只是一种文字的风格嘛,看多了当然会厌,每次读过太美的文字,
要再读几篇王小波来中和才好。事实上通俗文学,如情色小说(那个romance),
和台湾散文之类,文字往往唯美得不象话,能创造自己的语言风格还不被人
丢西红柿的,一般都是“大师”. :)

complain to, um, have a little LorR on the side. :P

汗...我理解的melodic是个泛泛的形容,没法用来特征出某种风格。
个人喜欢的几个作家,borges, tolkien, proust, austen, 曹雪芹的文字都具备精
确美妙的节奏感音律感,虽然同称音乐感,可这几个的相差何其之多。甚至非文学
作品,若是用字准确节奏紧凑美好,我也会说它melodic。其实流水也可以被形容成
melodic嘛。
所以每次看到纠结于一个词语时真让我花眼,因为每个人的理解不一致,同个人的
直觉与知觉也会有分歧。象上面antenna执着的mood我后来猜是不是指心态,而我会
想当然的认为是情绪,感性认识。
同意lynny的说法,阅读风格相差万里的作品有相得益彰的效果。我会选择borges作
后备与镜子,因为自己比较唐僧。;)
