The Rubber Duck

From sculpting to decorating the vinyl polymer material, engineering a rubber duck is quite a complex process. However, what truly inspires me about the rubber duck is not how it is constructed, but how it has shaped world culture.

In Thailand, the rubber duck symbolizes pro-democracy protest. In America, the duck symbolizes childhood and nostalgia. In science, the rubber duck even symbolizes climatology, as groups, such as NASA, have used them to study tidal patterns. Throughout the globe and time, rubber ducks have remained culturally relevant, an awe-inspiring feat.

Additionally, my personal experience with rubber ducks has inspired me as an engineer. I grew up with numerous ducks in my bathtub. I remember winning them at carnival games, and watching Ernie on Sesame Street sing the “Do De Rubber Duck” song. They symbolize my childhood, and today, they also symbolize my love for problem-solving. As I always have a rubber duck on my desk, so in need, I can explain my code to it - a process known as rubber duck debugging. Even at 17, the duck remains significant in my life.

Not every engineering invention needs to be scientifically complex, so only those in high academia can comprehend or utilize it. This is what the rubber duck taught me, for even the simplistic things can have far reaching cultural impacts. I want to create inventions like the rubber duck. I want to study engineering to invent technology that has a global impact to empower the common people.

My computer screen flashes with colorful bars sorting themselves by height in my selection sort visualizer. The past five hours of studying selection sort, scribbling down my thoughts in the stages of planning, and debugging error after error have finally amounted into the final product running perfectly before my eyes. I scramble to my phone. Open up Spotify. Play my latest favorite song at the top volume, and start dancing my heart out within my room.

One of my quirks is I love to break out into dance.

I am not a dancer, nor do I strive to be one. I just love to move around and enjoy the music during times of joy. Whether I am alone or outside in the rain with people giving me confusing looks from their windows, I immerse myself in music and let my body become one with the beat. In my mind, it is only me and the music.

Although this quirk stems from my love of music and movement, it also represents one of my most valued practices: savoring the moment. Whether it is because we are focused on mistakes from our past or goals for our future, we all struggle with living in the present. Life passes by fast, and I never want to reflect and realize that I never actually lived it. Thus, especially during monumental occasions, I always turn up my music, dance my heart out, and savor the beautiful moment of the now.
