1 ditch
除了作名词表示“沟渠”,还可以作动词,意思是“get rid of sth/sb because you no longer want or need it/them 摆脱;抛弃;丢弃”。
Mr Johnson has chosen a hard exit, ditching the EU’s single market and customs union.
I can`t bring myself to ditch him/her and start again.
即end a relationship with sb。
2 cut
Brexit cuts deep into
the courts and universities, and will make it poorer, as fishermen and
bankers encounter trade barriers to Europe where before there were none.
cut deep into..
She had fallen and cut her head open .
你可以说pull out a tooth或extract a tooth。
3 a leap in the dark
a leap是跳跃,in the dark是看不见,所以a leap in the dark就是在看不见的情况下跳跃。即“an action or a risk that you take without knowing anything about the activity or what the result will be (未了解情况就采取的)冒险举动”
The EU’s breadth and reach, say nationalists, means independence is not a leap in the dark like Brexit, but a defined destination for which they can prepare.
You must think twice before you take this step.
还有,如果表达闰年,也是用leap:a leap year
4 sea cucumber
How covid-19 walloped sea-cucumber catchers
I would like shark's fin and sea cucumber to be served.
5 exacting
Accession negotiations with Europe would be more cordial, but exacting.
Privately they seem to have the same exacting standards. He was an exacting man to work for.
