Lexington - A Sense of Place

Lexington: A Sense of Place Celebration

日期:8月8日下午4点

地点:Minuteman Bikeway

Between Visitor Center and Hancock Street

Lexington - A Sense of Place

Lexington: A Sense of Place Celebration

Date:4pm, August 8

Address:Minuteman Bikeway

Between Visitor Center and Hancock Street

Lexington: A Sense of Place, a temporary public art exhibit brought to you by the Lexington Council for the Arts, curated by Laurie Bogdan. It is displayed along the Minuteman Bikeway (between the Visitors Center and Hancock Street). Six sculptures, created by local artists and architects, will be on view until the late fall 2023. These imaginative, creative pieces take aspects of Lexington's architectural styles, past and present, as their source of inspiration.

This first image is Frames of Time by Bechtel Frank Erickson Architects, Inc.

Inspired by the fenestration of buildings in Lexington, this installation consists of multiple windows, some of which depict old images of the town. Curious passers-by step onto the varied shadows cast by the construction as they walk into the wooden frame, engaging with views of the past and present, while experiencing how windows are a key tool in maintaining the historical fabric of Lexington.

This second image  is by David Ardito makes references to the temple architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome. Classical architectural elements appear in numerous structures throughout modern day Lexington, including churches residential architecture, and municipal buildings. These references are often used by architects and artists to pay homage to past cultures that gave birth to democracy and that also developed idealized art and architectural forms. They take on even more meaning and relevance in a town that was so central to the American Revolution and the birth of democracy.

Teens Exploring Henna Art

Teens Exploring Henna Art: Learn to Design Beautiful Motifs with Niyathi Srinivasan

Date: Saturday, Aug 26, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

 Age Range: 12-18

Location: 130 Waltham St, Lexington, MA, 02420

Class: $45 (Log in for membership discount prices)

Henna, more traditionally referred to as Mehendi art, is a temporary tattoo art form consisting of intricate motifs that adorn hands and feet. In this class for teens, we will be taking an unconventional approach to the ancient art form. We will begin by getting familiar with handling the henna cone (which can be quite different from anything you have worked with). We will then move to drawing some common patterns, such as flowers, leaves, vines, and mangoes, but make the patterns on a canvas. Of course, you are welcome to also draw on your hands; this art class will provide all supplies required. You will take home a handmade canvas with a motif of your choice drawn in henna. There will be plenty of sample canvases and henna motifs you can choose from to experiment with. Whether you enjoy painting, drawing, sculpture, or cake decorating, are you ready to try out plant based henna paste and be surprised by the outcome?

Come be part of this exciting journey and enhance your artistic skills through hands-on exploration with the versatile medium of henna!

Creative Writing Workshop

Creative Writing Workshop: Finding and Telling Your Story

Date: Wednesday, August 30

7:00 – 8:00 pm

Location: Large Meeting Room, Cary Memorial Library, 874 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA

We all have personally significant stories to tell, but how do we best begin to write them? How can we invite readers into an experience we've had — or an experience we've imagined for a fictional character — with narrative momentum? And how do we discover more about our stories, beyond simply what happened? This workshop explores all of these questions with an imaginative process that begins with single sentences. The stories and the meaning they hold grow from there.

This workshop is for adults and teens who are interested in learning creative writing skills. The instruction and exploration may be helpful for teens who are in the process of developing their college essays.  This is NOT a college essay writing workshop.

Allan is the founder of Hillside Writing. He began his literary career at twenty-three, apprenticing under novelist John Irving, whom he assisted through several sentence-by-sentence revisions of a 1,000-page manuscript.
