竞赛揭晓｜海南2023年环岛旅游公路重点驿站规划设计国际竞赛

On October 10, 2023, the Department of Natural Resources and Planning of Hainan Province successfully hosted the final review and award ceremony of the "2023 Hainan Island Scenic Route Key Stations Planning and Design International Competition" in Haikou. After intense competition, the first, second, and third prizes, as well as finalists, were awarded for the planning and design of "MuLanBoGuang" station in Wenchang, the "YinTanFanGe" station in Danzhou, and the "HaiTangHuaYu" station in Sanya. Representatives from he Department of Natural Resources and Planning of Hainan Province, the Hainan Provincial Planning Exhibition Hall, and the Natural Resources and Planning Bureaus of Wenchang, Danzhou and Sanya attended the event.

This competition attracted 62 design teams from multiple countries, resulting in a total of 88 entries. Specifically, there were 35 entries for "MuLanBoGuang" station, 32 entries for YinTanFanGe" station, and 21 entries for "HaiTangHuaYu" station. After the phase one review on August 7th, five design teams for each station advanced to the final review phase, where the final jury selected three winning designs for each station. The competition's final review was supervised throughout by Nanhai Notary Office, Haikou City, Hainan Province.

During the review, the participating teams presented their station design concepts, overall spatial layouts, architectural highlights, integration of cultural features, alignment with natural landscapes, and showcased their unique interpretations of the Island Scenic Route Key Stations. They also demonstrated considerations for business operations and activities within their designs.

After listening to the presentations, the final jury carefully examined the project models and display boards. They meticulously assessed the unique creativity and expression of outcomes in each proposal and listened to the visions conveyed through the designs.

During the award ceremony, representatives from each participating team took the stage to receive their award certificates and took commemorative photos with the organizers and jury. The design proposals received advice and guidance from the jury, and their efforts over the past three months were met with enthusiastic applause and heartfelt congratulations.

The jury of this final review meeting consisted of six experts in fields, along with one government representative. Mr. Jacques Ferrier, founder of the French architectural firm JFA, attended the final review as a special guest.

Hainan Province is the largest special economic zone and the only tropical island province in China. At present, guided by the national strategic deployment, the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port is in full swing, and Hainan is accelerating towards a high-quality " international tourism consumption center".

Hainan Island boasts nearly 2,000 kilometers of coastline, and a nearly thousand-kilometer-long island scenic route is planned along its coast. This scenic route showcases Hainan's unique geographical and natural cultural characteristics. Along this nearly thousand-kilometer-long " National Coastal Scenic Byway No. 1 " 40 distinct stations will be constructed. The goal of this competition is to seek advanced-level station planning and design solutions, aiming to activate Hainan's rich and diverse tourism resources, accelerate the formation of a comprehensive tourism landscape.

In 2022, Hainan invited eight world-renowned designers to participate in the "Master Work Camp", eight stations representing eight new lifestyles, a creative collision in Hainan. Among them, the "YingGeChangWan" station in Ledong County, the "HuoShanHaiAn" and "XiZhaoDanEr" stations in Danzhou City, and the "RiYueZhuLang" station in Wanning City have already been under construction.

In July 2023, a new batch of 10 stations initiated their design work. Among them, "“MuLanBoGuang" station in Wenchang City, "YinTanFanGe" station in Danzhou City, and "HaiTangHuaYu" station in Sanya City collected outstanding design proposals through this open competition, while the remaining seven stations underwent design through a invitation format.

Wenchang Mulan lighthouse is the highest in Asia, the world's second modern large lighthouse, which is Hainan's most important navigational beacon, climbing the tower can view the windmill coast and the beauty of the Qixingling. The station is located next to the lighthouse and is positioned as The Micro-vacation Destination of Youths. It will feature three main functional areas: sun and star-gazing, food tourism and duty-free shopping. The conceptual planning area for the station covers approximately 200 acres, with a schematic design of around 100,300 square meters. It includes an Aurora Tower as highlight configuration that provide a public cultural function for visitors.

The design is based on the principle of minimal intervention, respecting the site's geomorphic elevation differences, and utilizing a cladding roof that is highly compatible with the surrounding terrain to achieve maximum integration with nature. The horizontal circular bridge shopping center, coiled between the "hills" and the "valleys" , connects the site in terms of viewing dimension. The only vertical element in the site, the Aurora Tower, is pulled up by steel cables extending from the earth, and the horizontal ring bridge is dotted with void of nature. The abstract object is like a ruler of the earth, emphasizing the magnificent landscape of the site surrounded by the sea on three sides.

Located at the end of Hainan island, Mulan and surrounding area are assumed to be “Hainan Cape Spectacle Park”. For Mulan station, we create a new spectacle called “Sunrise Rock Beach”, viewing the sea in the east. The center of the Rock Beach consists of sea view beach at the bottom and the rocks on the top, and the geomorphic ring is constructed by landscape buildings on the outside. In the future, in Mulan, you can climb the rock, view the sunrise above the sea, and live inside the nature. The future of Mulan is made by Nature.

Mulan Lighthouse is a beacon in the South China Sea, Asia's first lighthouse, has illuminated the way home for countless ships over the past 20 years. This place bears witness to the courage of our ancestors as they sailed through the angry seas and ventured into the South Seas. Today, we have a station themed as "MuLanBoGuang" paying tribute to the spirit of our forebears who battled nature. The old swaying small boats are no longer here; they have been replaced by the Aurora Tower in the shape of a sail, leading a complex of buildings with "water droplets" as the theme, shining the "light of hope, exploration, and pioneering" into the distance, just like the beacon of Mulan Head Lighthouse, illuminating the sparkling sea.

The site is located in a spectacular natural setting, next to the sea, on the beautiful island of Hainan and similarly, nature sits at the heart of the design proposal. By breaking the proposal into multiple volumes, each set under an expressive canopy, we have allowed the natural environment to be part of the design. This brings the natural ecology in as a key design element which inhabits the space between the built forms, providing shading and a beautiful natural environment while maintaining a low carbon operation. By carefully distributing the programmatic function around the site, a small campus has been created which allows pedestrians to meander through using various different routes. This creates an environment where outdoor and indoor seamlessly blend together, and pedestrians can flow through, finding different routes and spaces as they explore the space as if it were a forest.

The design is based on the theme of the compass of the starry sea, using abstract language to represent the magnetic needle of the compass at the northernmost tip of Hainan Island and the shore of the Qiongzhou Strait, making the design a high-level landmark on the geographical level and the spiritual level; the station can be used as a holy place for astronomical observation, equipped with a platform for astronomical observation activities, so that you can observe the sun and watch the stars, and watch tracking of the launching of Wenchang; the station is oriented towards the sea, the mountains and forests, and the lighthouse is spread in a circular shape, so that you can Watch the sunrise and sunset, and listen to the ebb and flow of the tide; as a youthful micro-vacation destination, the station creates an attractive and trendy island-ring station; the station adopts phased construction and spontaneous growth, with the circular windmill axis complex as the start-up core, and the outside of the ring as the development period, and spontaneous growth.

"YinTanFanGe" station is located in the town of Guangcun, Danzhou City, adjacent to the Guangcun Silver Beach. Silver Beach has white and delicate soft sand, blue and clear water, surrounded by trees and shadows, stretching for more than ten kilometers. The station is positioned as The sea full of poems and songs. The station will feature a Timeless Chapel and a Boundless Outdoor Theater, integrating performance, scenic views, coffee, and light dining. The ancient intangible cultural heritage Danzhou tune will become youthful and stylish thanks to the station. The conceptual planning area for the station covers approximately 199.8 acres, with a schematic design of around 66,600 square meters.

Surrounded by mountains, forests, fields, and ancient coastal remnants, the plan draws its inspiration from the natural extensions around the site. It weaves together architecture, landscapes, and the environment, using the existing natural elements as a key theme. 5% of the buildings are concealed within nature, with a 'small within the large' concept, facing away from green spaces and towards the vast sea.As a cultural hub in Hainan, Danzhou engages in a dialogue with history while creating architecture oriented toward the future. Transforming Hainan's year-round weather into dreamlike scenes, using time as the script and solar terms as the backdrop, it unfolds a 'time container' that carries cultural memories. Utilizing sound, light, wind, rain, and dew as mediums, it reenacts Danzhou's ceremonial and musical culture in architectural clusters. Along the diagonal, various cultural symbols converge during exploration. The landscape, akin to earth sculptures, coexists harmoniously with geometric architecture.

The inspiration for the project comes from the site, with its core concept being the "Shell Necklace on Silver Beach". Each cultural building is as recognizable as a shell, forming a harmonious whole. While respecting the ecology, the design enhances the landscape experience, blending the architecture seamlessly with nature. The hotel area is based on three types of traditional Hainanese houses, setting up three kinds of hotels. The camping area presents an atmosphere of a youth community hidden in the tropical jungle. Overall, the project resonates with themes of music, ocean, and shells, showcasing an organic, dynamic, and harmonious spatial experience.

BOUNDLESS is representing an infinite extension of space, this form breaks the barrier between architecture and the ocean, sky and forest. We wanted to create free and open spaces that interact with the surrounding areas. The design transforms pictures of Danzhou life from multiple traditional elements such as boats, sails, fishing and waves. Relying on the BOUNDLESS theater, it is like a light "net cloth" slowly falling into the site. People can not only sing and dance above of it, but also listen to a Danzhou concert show below of if.

Sliver beach, pine groves, sea breeze, sunset, tides rise and fall, all the force of nature converge here. Preserving the harmony between people, villages, and the beach, a place built between people and nature, where they can coexist joyfully.

“ clouds scatter and the moon shines bright... the music reverberated in ears”, the waves are shallow, the sky is faintly layered, The clear moon hangs high, and the tuning sound is often accompanied. The crescent theater, the winding corridors, the wave-like roof lines, and the overlapping courtyards are faintly visible, in the form of chanting objects, presenting the most sincere praise poem of nature - Moon reflects on silver beach , with lingering melodies.

The overall design concept of the project is based on "Abundance of the Sea" and "Romance of Song," focusing on the cultural heritage of Danzhou diao sheng (a traditional local musical style) and the unique features of Guangcun Silver Beach. The plan aims to enhance the experience of the intangible cultural heritage, bringing it to life and integrating it with tourism. Leveraging the exceptional natural resources of Silver Beach, the project creates a localized expression of traditional Danzhou diao sheng, building a creative and playful micro-community connected by musical notes. It creates diverse, immersive romantic vacation experiences through the development of architecturally rich and engaging spaces.

"HaiTangHuaYu" station is located in Haitang Bay, the eastern seaside of Sanya City and the center of emerging international tourism consumption, a quiet corner in the National Coastal Recreation Park. The station is surrounded by a collection of China's best tropical coastal scenic spots and is an important place for high-profile international economic and cultural exchanges in China. The station is positioned as The World's Top Wine Tasting Center. It will rely on the advantages of the free trade port to establish a world-class destination for wine tasting, featuring international-level wine cellars. It aims to create a tourism complex that combines fashion and art, providing vacation and wellness services. The conceptual planning area for the station covers approximately 110 acres, with a schematic design of about 72,500 square meters, including the Luminous Garden corridor , the station will become one of the most upscale tourism complex in Sanya.

The design is rooted in the site, guiding the wind, softening the light, getting close to the water, retaining the green, allowing the nature to design, echoing the characteristic seawall texture with the organic layout of the courtyard and corridor, the integration and penetration of the building and the environment, and the pleasant micro-climate. The characteristic buildings taken from the Hainan volcano image, combined with the corridor system of Tongshan and the sea, create six theme scene Spaces: Sea language art Court, Sea dream coconut forest, crabapple water garden, Sea Street theater, Sea moon invitation cup, sea pond fishing song, and write a recreation experience of Yazhou Moon listening to the rising tide and crabapple flower language.

Inspired by mangrove habitat and crabapple blossom. The design form simulates organic vines growing toward the sea. The buildings are devised into a crabapple blossom-shaped settlement, to be a new attractive destination for tourism around the island.A profound response to project requirements and site resources. A fascinating service station offering quality service, high-end luxury enjoyment, family health preservation, and distinctive photogenic spots for youth travelers.

The station harnesses the advantages of being situated between two bays and having a mountain-to-sea vista to create an island-style wetland ecological park centered around the rest stop. By depicting scenes like "flying birds," "mountain forests," and "sailing," it shapes a poetic mountain and sea settlement. Different types of lightweight roofs are used to create various spatial scenes, outlining unique imagery of drifting clouds and birds in flight. The design follows the natural growth patterns, forming pedestrian axes and site textures that traverse the area. Above these axes, cloud pavilions emerge, extending outward from the central cloud pavilion, giving rise to a series of organic and naturally grown ecological island settlements.

In order to highlight the characteristics of red wine and create new categories of tourism. We propose the vision of creating a new IP for drinking around people. Through five aspects of design, we systematically create a brand new experience space for drinking: an overall layout that allows drinking to be seen; a pink lounge that allows drinking to play; a mountain cloud pavilion that allows drinking to swim; a tree house in the forest that allows drinking to live; and a themed business that allows drinking to be tasted, all in one, to tell a story of drinking together.

Moon in the pocket alley.Our design raises themes about time. From ancient post houses to today's post houses, we try to use the concept of squares to respond to the flexibility of time changes. The spatial pattern is like the numerous lanes and streets in the ancient city. , displaying carefully crafted scenario-themed workshops in the lanes, incorporating changing moonlight elements, the buildings extend from the north and south directions respectively, and converge in the middle to rebuild the dynamic balance between people, technology and culture.
