Excerpts from White House Press Briefing…

During the Q&A portion of the November 28 White House Press Briefing by Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communication John Kirby, reporters asked several questions including seeking to learn more on President Biden and President Xi’s meeting in Bali a couple of weeks ago. Fielding a question on whether the two leaders discussed the pandemic and the effect it has had around the world, Mr. Kirby said: 

“They did talk about COVID and the effect that the pandemic had had around the world.  Clearly, that came up inside the conversation.  I don’t know if, specifically, the zero-COVID policy was an issue of discussion, but certainly COVID was on the agenda, as you might expect that it would be…And our message to peaceful protesters around the world is the same and consistent: People should be allowed the right to assemble and to peacefully protest policies or laws or dictates that they take issue with.” 

In a separate statement issued to media outlets, the NSC provided the following points: 

“We’ve said that zero COVID is not a policy we are pursuing here in the United States. And as we’ve said, we think it’s going to be very difficult for the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to be able to contain this virus through their zero COVID strategy. Lockdowns and zero COVID is going to be very difficult to sustain.”

“For us, we are focused on what works and that means using the public health tools like: continuing to enhance vaccination rates, including boosters and making testing and treatment easily accessible.” 

“We’ve long said everyone has the right to peacefully protest, here in the United States and around the world. This includes in the People’s Republic of China (PRC).”
