《奥本海默》影评丨纽约时报

被影迷称为“诺神”的导演诺兰，以及被称为“美国的普罗米修斯”的科学家罗伯特·奥本海默，这两个人物碰撞在一起，使得电影《奥本海默》成为2023年最受全球关注的影片之一。

我前天看了电影，很震撼，后劲十足。应大家的要求，找来了电影《奥本海默》的影评，来自《纽约时报》，和大家分享：

一、原文

“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s staggering film about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man known as “the father of the atomic bomb,” condenses a titanic shift in consciousness into three haunted hours. A drama about genius, hubris and error, both individual and collective, it brilliantly charts the turbulent life of the American theoretical physicist who helped research and develop the two atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II — cataclysms that helped usher in our human-dominated age.

二、精读

克里斯托弗·诺兰执导的精彩影片《奥本海默》(Oppenheimer)讲述了“原子弹之父”罗伯特·奥本海默的故事，将一场意识的剧变浓缩为令人久久难忘的三个小时。

这句话高度浓缩了作者对电影《奥本海默》的评价：three haunted hours 难忘的三小时（影片长达3小时）。

先看这句话的主干：“Oppenheimer” condenses a titanic shift in consciousness into three haunted hours.

主干的结构为：condense...into...，condense 表示“浓缩”，既可以指使液体浓缩，也可以指使文字、信息浓缩，看两个例句：

Condense the soup by boiling it for several minutes.

煮几分钟把汤熬浓。

This whole chapter could be condensed into a few paragraphs.

这一整章可以压缩成几个段落。

a titanic shift 指“巨大的转变”，其中 titanic 作形容词表示 very large “巨大的”，“泰坦尼克号”的英文就是Titanic。它的名词形式是 titan，常出现在商业领域的文章中，指“巨头、大公司”，可以和 giant 替换。

three haunted hours 指“难忘的三小时”，haunt 本义指“(鬼魂)出没”，在生活中常引申为 keep coming to your mind so that you cannot forget it “萦绕于脑际，使难以忘却”，如：

The memory of that day still haunts me.

我的脑海中常常回想起那天的情景。

Clare was haunted by the fear that her husband was having an affair.

克莱尔总是担心丈夫有外遇。

《摩登家庭》第六季中也出现过这个用法：

回到文中来，主干的意思是 “Oppenheimer” condenses a titanic shift in consciousness into three haunted hours 《奥本海默》将一场意识的剧变浓缩为令人久久难忘的三个小时。

staggering 意思是 so great, shocking or surprising that it is difficult to believe “令人吃惊的”，相当于amazing，这是对影片极高的评价。

看一个《生活大爆炸》里的例句：

It's a scientific discovery that has staggering implications for all mankind.

这个科学发现对全人类来说都有巨大的意义。

J. Robert Oppenheimer 后面也嵌套了一个同位语结构，对人物奥本海默进行介绍：the man known as “the father of the atomic bomb”

被称为原子弹之父的一个人。

我们看一段 Rotten Tomatoes（烂番茄，西方的影评网站，可类比中国的豆瓣）上网友对这部影片的评价：

"Oppenheimer" is a breathtaking masterpiece that skillfully combines the elements of action, audio, acting, direction, and scene design into an unforgettable cinematic experience.

《奥本海默》实为一部惊世之作，其娴熟地将动作、音效、演技、导演和场景设计等元素巧妙融合，为观众呈现了一场难以忘怀的电影盛宴。

这句话和New York Times里的句子有很多相似之处，放在一起看看能学到哪些表达：

形容电影精彩，可以用 a staggering film 或 a breathtaking masterpiece；

表示“电影融合了...”，可以用 condense...into，也可以用 combine...into；

形容观影体验令人难忘，可以说 an unforgettable cinematic experience 或 two/three haunted hours；

通过对比学习，我们能积累到更丰富、多样的表达。

这是一部关于天才、狂妄和错误的剧情片，既有个人的，也有集体的，出色地描绘了这位美国理论物理学家纷纷扰扰的一生，他参与研发了二战期间投在广岛和长崎的两颗原子弹——那场大灾难推动我们走向了一个人类主宰的时代。

这个长句介绍了电影的内容。

A drama about genius, hubris and error, both individual and collective

这部分可以看成主语“It”的同位语，用来补充和解释电影的主题和内容。

hubris 意思是“傲慢、狂妄”，反义词是 humility “谦逊、谦虚”，《福布斯》网站曾谈到如何做一个优秀的领导人，题目中就出现了这对反义词：

it brilliantly charts the turbulent life of the American theoretical physicist

这部电影出色地记录了这位美国理论物理学家纷纷扰扰的一生

这是本句的主干。

chart 在这里做动词，表示 to record “记录”，这个意思由名词含义“图表”引申而来，做成图表，也就是“记录”。看两个例句：

The exhibition charts the history of the palace.

展览记载了这座王宫的历史。

Scientists have been charting temperature changes in the oceans.

科学家们一直在记录海洋的温度变化。

还记不记得我们在《李玟生前控诉<中国好声音>丨时代周刊精读》一文中讲过的 charted hits（榜上有名的热门歌曲），点击蓝色超链接可前往阅读。

The movie charts the turbulent life of 可以当成一个语块积累下来，以后描述影片内容时，就可以直接套用这个句型，比如我们介绍一下《我不是药神》：

A gripping film about resilience, compassion, and the complexities of the pharmaceutical industry, "Dying to Survive" brilliantly charts the turbulent life of a Chinese entrepreneur who risked everything to provide affordable medication to cancer patients, sparking a nationwide conversation about healthcare access and ethics.

《我不是药神》是一部扣人心弦的影片，讲述了有关坚韧、同情以及制药行业复杂性的元素。影片精妙地描绘了一个中国企业家的坎坷生活，他毅然决然冒险为癌症患者提供经济实惠的药物。这部电影引发了国内关于医疗资源获取和伦理道德的热议。

回到文中来，the American theoretical physicist 后面加了个定语从句，对这位物理学家进行介绍：who helped research and develop the two atomic bombs

他帮助研发了两颗原子弹

atomic bombs 后面又嵌套了个定语从句，对“原子弹”进行补充：that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II

在二战期间投到广岛和长崎的两颗原子弹

后面还加了个同位语结构：cataclysms that helped usher in our human-dominated age.

cataclysm [ˈkætəklɪzəm] 意思是 a sudden disaster or a violent “大灾难，大灾变，大动乱”，这里是同位语，指向广岛长崎投掷两颗原子弹，这件事是一场灾难。

that helped usher in our human-dominated age 是定语从句，修饰cataclysms，意思是，这场灾难开启了人类主导的时代。

usher 读音为 [‘ʌʃə]，usher in是个固定搭配，英文解释为：to cause something new to start, or to be at the start of something new. 可以翻译成“开创”“开启”。

《经济学人》中有篇文章讲到了土耳其总理埃尔多安的强权政治，里面是这么歌颂埃尔多安的政绩的：

Encouraged by the IMF, he tamed inflation and ushered in economic growth.

在国际货币基金组织 (IMF) 的帮助下，埃尔多安遏制了通货膨胀，开创了经济增长的新时代。（IMF = International Monetary Fund = 国际货币基金组织，考MTI的同学要背过。）

usher in 可以用于科技类话题的写作中，比如：

AI ushers in great changes in the way we live.

人工智能给我们的生活带来巨大的改变。
