Lesson 105 - Cardiovascular - Coronary Heart Disease (冠心病)
A man who has been diagnosed with Coronary heart disease.
Sean: Hello friends. Welcome back again to Hansons weekly English lecture. Tonight we will read a dialogue between a doctor and a man who has been diagnosed with Coronary heart disease.
D: Hello Mr Black, please take a seat and let us discuss the results of your tests.
P: OK Doctor, I’m ready when you are. Fill me in.
D: I wont beat around the bush, you have coronary heart disease. Do you know what this means?
P: I can make a rough guess from the words mentioned but it doesn't sound pleasing at all. Please explain it to me in layman’s terms.
D: I don’t want to frighten you but i must inform you of all the details, Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a major cause of death worldwide. CHD is also referred to as Ischaemic heart disease or coronary artery disease..
The main symptoms of CHD are chest pains (angina), heart attacks or heart failure. You can also have other symptoms, such as heart palpitations and unusual breathlessness.
But not everyone has the same symptoms and some people may not have any before CHD is diagnosed. What alarmed me to the possibility of you having CHD was your complaints of chest pains and breathlessness.
P: I’m glad you were on the ball with your diagnosis Doctor. Can you explain what CHD is and tell me what my treatment options are?
D: Certainly, and before I continue I want to reassure you that its not all doom and gloom. We have many options available to help your body heal this affliction.
Now let me explain, Coronary heart disease is the term that describes what happens when your heart's blood supply is blocked or interrupted by a build-up of fatty substances in the coronary arteries.
Over time, the walls of your arteries can become furred up with fatty deposits. This process is known as atherosclerosis and the fatty deposits are called atheroma. Atherosclerosis can be caused by lifestyle factors, such as smoking and regularly drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
I know that you are a smoker Mr Black, and it is my duty to inform you that if you want to see dramatic improvements in your health then you must give up. I would say stop right now but I know that may be difficult, so my recommendation is prepare yourself from this second onwards that you will quit after today is done. The box of cigarettes in your pocket should be your last. Also alcohol is the next on my list of things to give up.
P: Consider it done. What other ways can I improve my health? This is a severe wake up call for me. I need to get my life in order.
