Lesson 106 - Cardiovascular - Valvular Heart Disease
Valvular Heart Disease
A female patient with Valvular Heart Disease.
Sean: Hello, everyone, welcome back to Hansons Weekly Oral English Lecture, sponsored my MedEditing. Tonight’s lesson is based on Valvular Heart Disease. Let’s begin.
D: Hello Mrs Rafferty, I'll cut to the chase. We've got the results from your tests and the situation we are faced with is Valvular heart disease. Are you aware of this affliction?
P: I'm not really sure at all what that means, can you explain it to me?
D: OK Mrs Rafferty. Valvular heart disease is characterized by damage to or a defect in one of the four heart valves: the mitral, aortic, tricuspid or pulmonary.
The mitral and tricuspid valves control the flow of blood between the atria and the ventricles, which are the upper and lower chambers of the heart. The pulmonary valve controls the flow of blood from the heart to the lungs, and the aortic valve governs blood flow between the heart and the aorta, and thereby the blood vessels to the rest of the body. The mitral and aortic valves are the ones most frequently affected by valvular heart disease. Your problem is coming from the mitral valve.
P: I understand Doctor, so there is a problem with my blood flow. Can you tell me why the problem is happening?
