Arrhythmias (Heart rhythm disturbances)
A patient aged 45 who has been diagnosed with a type of Arrhythmias.
Sean: Good evening, Doctors. I hope you all had a new year celebration filled with as much joy and happiness as possible. We are now ready to begin our weekly oral English lecture.
D: Hello again Mr Portland, thanks for sitting tight. We have received the results of your tests, and it's as I suspected, you have a certain type of Arrhythmias, which is a heart rhythm disturbance.
P: Ck Doctor, It's better to know so that I can face the music. What type of disturbance do I have in my heart?
D: Overall we have 6 different types of Arrhythmias. There are Atrial-fibulation (A-fib), Atrial flutter, Supraventricular tachycardia, Ventricular tachycardia, Ventricular fibrillation and Long QT syndrome. What you are dealing with is Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
P: What does this mean? What do I need to do to fix this problem?
D: This means that your heart is beating rapidly in a rhythm. This is the reason you have been experiencing lightheadedness and breathlessness Mr Portland.
We have many different treatments we can offer, but I don't think its wise for us to jump the gun and go straight for surgery. I will prescribe some medication for you, which, combined with some exercises called Vagal maneuvers can be effective in helping you.
Do you drink, smoke or have any other toxic habits?
P: I smoke everyday and drink 3 or 4 times per week doctor. I also drink 3 cups of coffee everyday.
D: As of right now, I suggest you go cold turkey Mr Portland. No more smoking, or drinking alcohol or coffee. Consume water as much as possible. Exercise more too, but I recommend starting slowly. Go for a nice walk on your lunch break and have another walk in the evening. Once you start to breathe better you can step it up with your exercises to improve your heart's strength and restore your heart rhythm back to normal.
