录音讲座+讲义
Congenital heart disease.
A pregnant woman who had influenza (the flu) in the first 3 months of pregnancy which has raised the possibility of her baby developing a congenital heart defect.
Sean: Welcome to Hansons weekly oral English lecture, sponsored by MedEditing. I hope you have all had a good week. I am now going to begin this weeks lesson.
D: Hello Mrs Miller, please have a seat. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but sadly this is the position I find myself in. The ultrasound scan showed that your baby is likely to develop a certain type of congenital heart disease.
P: What does this mean? What defect is going to harm my baby? Is my baby going to be okay?
D:The disease is called Coarctation of the aorta. This means that the main artery (the aorta) has a narrowing, which means that less blood can flow through it.
P: What can be done to help my poor child?
D: If your child has the more serious form of coarctation of the aorta that develops shortly after birth, surgery to restore the flow of blood through the aorta is usually recommended in the first few days of life. We have surgical procedures such as, removing the narrowed section of the aorta and reconnecting the 2 remaining ends, inserting a catheter into the aorta and widening it with a balloon or metal tube (stent) or removing sections of blood vessels from other parts of your child's body and using them to create an aorta in the region of the coarctation or bypass around the site of the blockage (this is similar to a coronary artery bypass graft, which is used to treat heart disease).
P: And if it's not so serious?
D: We have a technique called Balloon angioplasty and stenting which can be very effective. We can also administer medication that keeps the ductus arteriosus open. This allows blood to flow around the constriction until the coarctation is repaired if required.
P: What will we do in the meantime?
D: We will continue on as if nothing has happened. Maybe in time this defect will disappear by itself as your baby grows in your womb, but if not we will be ready and waiting to act as required to help your baby overcome this affliction.
P: So there is a chance that this could repair on it's own?
D: Stranger things have happened. I like to believe miracles are possible Mrs Miller. The more positive you are will give you a better mental state which can affect the outcome of this situation.
P: Okay doctor, I will try to be as calm and positive as possible and believe we can achieve a better outcome. I need to believe that better things can happen.
D: Okay Mrs Miller, I'm glad to hear that. We will monitor the progress of your pregnancy closely. That's all we have to talk about today, if you have any further questions please contact me at anytime. I will see you next time. Take care of yourself and your child.
