U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry: The climate crisis waits for no one
October 25, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry addressed the Foreign Relations about the state of the climate crisis and the #RoadtoCOP27#. Here are some highlights:
The climate crisis waits for no one. The threats don’t call in sick. Neither can countries committed to action just hit the pause button.
Countries have come to the brutal realization that not only is the climate crisis a threat, but over-dependence on fossil fuels has given dictators and despots the ability to weaponize energy.
The test this year is -- will countries put commitments into action? And, will outlier countries that haven’t strengthened their commitments now step up?
It is not just countries that must lead individually – it is in the aggregate of hundreds of different public and private commitments that we will make the most progress.
We also recognize the moral and economic imperative of helping vulnerable countries and communities adapt to the impacts of climate change.
There is no mystery about what we must do. The real mystery is why it remains a fight just to do what common sense and science tell us we must do.
We know that the future is cleaner, greener, and healthier – if we can get there together, in time. And we can.
