A popular science blogger brought attention to a concerning trend of tourists posing with Ochotonids, or normally known as pikas, in their hands. The pictures of tourists handling these cute animals have gone viral, raising alarm among conservationists and experts.
Reports from various online forums reveal that some tourists claim to have captured these wild pikas in the Qilian Grassland region. A few individuals even questioned why it should be wrong to catch such adorable creatures.
The blogger took to her subsequent posts to shed light on the potential risks associated with this behavior. Firstly, she highlighted the fact that pikas have a certain probability of carrying fleas that can transmit plague. Secondly, such interactions may have adverse effects on the health and well-being of the individual animals.
"Regardless of how endearing wild animals may be, it is unacceptable to casually handle them," the blogger emphasized. She urged local guides, leaders, and professionals in the tourism industry to dissuade visitors from engaging in such actions.
Various other bloggers also joined in the discussion, stressing that catching wild pikas is an extremely hazardous activity.
According to a research by University of Richmond, plague (Yersinia bacterium) is a very common and highly fatal disease in many rodent species. It is a gram-negative bacterium that exists in a flea-rodent-flea life cycle and produces the extremely fatal and fast acting zoonotic disease that is implicated in at least three pandemics. Ochotonids are hosts for fleas, which carry the plague (Yersinia pestis) and other diseases.
In response to this growing concern, on Tuesday, a representative from Center for Disease Control and Prevention at Haibei prefecture, Qinghai province issued a public advisory. The official reiterated that such interactions with wild pikas carry the risk of infection, and tourists must refrain from touching or feeding them. If anyone witnesses similar incidents, they are encouraged to report them to the local health or disease control authorities.
Officials from the Qilian Mountain National Nature Reserve Office acknowledged the challenge of controlling individual tourist behavior, as pikas are found across the entire Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. They stated that their efforts are focused on educating and persuading visitors to respect the wildlife and refrain from such actions. While the grassland is not officially designated as a tourist attraction, they will still provide gentle reminders through public awareness campaigns.
As discussions continue to gain traction on social media and within the scientific community, authorities are hopeful that public awareness and education will lead to more responsible tourism practices, safeguarding both the health of visitors and the fragile wildlife in the region.
