专访全文如下:
Chih-Hao Yang is quickly becoming one of Chicago’s top go-to agents for Chinese-speaking immigrants. And for good reason: Chih-Hao knows exactly what it’s like for his clients, moving to the city as first-generation Americans, not knowing what to expect. His compassion, empathy, and ability to make the transition as smooth as possible for his clients has formed a foundation of referrals over the past three years that is catapulting his business into new heights today.Having started out as an agent in 2018, Chih-Hao closed just over $51,000 his first year just in rentals. He made his first sale in June of 2019, and went on to pull in just under $5 million in volume in 2020. Last year, all his hard work finally caught up and he exploded onto the scene, producing just under $10 million in volume.
“It is rewarding to see my business growing rapidly in such a short time,” says Chih-Hao. “I have met lots of people who are also first-generation immigrants like me. We share stories with each other and become friends. Everyone’s story is different and hearing them fuels my energy and keeps me going.”
Chih-Hao was fifteen years old when he left his home in Taipei to attend a boarding school in Chicago. His parents arranged for him to attend Lake Forest Academy, hoping he would be able to experience new things and receive better opportunities. He didn’t speak a word of English and he didn’t know a single person when he landed here in 2003.
“I was forced to grow up overnight when I took that plane to Chicago,” Chih-Hao explains. “I had to figure everything out for myself after that—laundry, food, work, and where to stay for holidays when all my friends were going home to their families.”“When I missed my family, I had to go buy a special phone card in Chinatown that allowed me to dial home from a landline,” he continues. “This was back in 2003—no iPhone, no internet calling for free. A calling card was about $50 dollars, and calls were a dollar per minute. Every minute counted. There was so much to say, and not enough time to say it.”
Chih-Hao went on to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and earned a degree in advertising with minors in business and chemistry. After graduating in 2011, he began working with a commercial real estate developer as a marketing manager/EB-5 specialist. He worked there for about six years, but in 2017, he had to take a leave of absence for about a year to go back to Taipei and take care of some family matters. When he returned in 2018, he found he no longer had a job.
“For the first time in my life, I felt depressed and lost not knowing what to do next,” he says. “I was thirty years old and was not sure what to do with my career. I started interviewing with various companies, but I could not seem to find the right fit for me.”
After interviewing for two months, one day, Chih-Hao’s good friend told him he would be a good real estate agent, pointing out the fact that he had not only lived in Chicago for nearly two decades, but had also lived all over Illinois; that he speaks Chinese and English fluently, and had previous experience in real estate and marketing. With nothing else going for him at the time, Chih-Hao decided to give it a shot. He took the accelerated broker classes in May 2018 and passed his exam the same month. As Chih-Hao started going to work as an agent and helping people in real estate, he immediately knew he made the right decision. “I love seeing my clients achieving their American Dreams and I am passionate that I am part of this important journey,” Chih-Hao says. “I was once scared, living in a new country, not knowing how to rent my first apartment, or when buying my first condo, not knowing how to even ask ComEd to turn on my electricity.”
“I know exactly how my clients feel when they are buying their first home. I explain everything in detail, in our mutual language, where they feel comfortable, and I make sure they know they are in good hands with me. I think many clients work with me because they find comfort in me, knowing I have been through all that they are going through right now. I see my clients referring me to their friends and family members, so I know I must be doing something right,” he says, smiling. As Chih-Hao continues growing his business, he wishes to offer some words of encouragement to fellow agents who are also experiencing rapid growth:
“I want to tell my fellow agents, don’t be afraid when your business starts to grow. You will get haters, and they will say things about you that might not be true. Just keep following the rules and do what’s right. To my fellow minority agents, we sometimes get nasty comments via text and email from other agents. Don’t get discouraged. To me, it only helps me to be stronger and know to be better than them.”Chih-Hao is doing that in more ways than one as a professional REALTOR®. Already a RENE certificate holder, he obtained his managing broker license in May of 2021. “I always want to be better,” states Chih-Hao. “The more I know, the more I can help my clients achieve their dreams.”
