Join
us at the Shanghai American Center for an exciting deep dive into U.S.
elections! In this election year, we
will host a series of events to discuss various aspects of the U.S. election
process for those who are curious about how the U.S. democratic system works
and how the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election is conducted.
What
exactly is a "swing state" in the context of American politics? How do we know one when we see one? How has
the conventional wisdom about which states are "swingy" and which aren't
changed over recent decades? What
factors drive less competitive states to become swing states and how do swing
states become less competitive over time? Why does all of this matter – for swing states
and for American politics writ large? Join us at the Shanghai American Center on
June 7th with Dr. Jason Douglas Todd, Assistant Professor of Political Science
and Public Policy at Duke Kunshan University for a discussion on Swing States
in American Politics.
This event will be conducted in English with Chinese

Dr. Jason Douglas Todd is Assistant Professor
of Political Science and Public Policy at Duke Kunshan University, where his
research examines responsiveness and representation in legislatures across the
world, including the United States and Vietnam. Questions include: How do ward-based electoral
arrangements, out-of-district campaign donations, and the provision of
policy-relevant constituency preferences affect responsiveness and
representation? How can we better
measure representation and misrepresentation in legislative bodies? How do electoral institutions foster rational
ignorance and what are the consequences when electoral commissions aren't
impartial? This research appears in the
American Political Science Review, The Journal of Politics, and Electoral
Studies and is forthcoming in Political Behavior. At Duke Kunshan, he teaches courses on
comparative politics, the policy cycle, and causal inference. He studied at Xiamen University and holds
