Either这个词究竟应该怎么用？

新概念英语写作社群里面有同学提到了一个问题：either应该怎么用？

either这个词初中英语就出现过，但是它的使用场景多变，而且还有多个词性，要用好它并不简单。除此之外，它还很容易跟neither搞混。这里分析一下either以及neither的用法。

neither在大部分情况下都相当于not either，两个单词都可以作为限定词、代词、连词和副词使用：

（1）限定词

当作为限定词使用时，either意思相当于“（两者中）每个，各方”（one or the other of two people or things），而neither相当于not either，即“两者皆非，两者都不”，比如：

You may borrow either book. 句子相当于：You may borrow one or the other of the two books. 即“你可以借两本书中的任何一本”。

You may borrow neither book. 句子相当于：You may not borrow one and you may not borrow the other of the two books. 即“两本书你都借不了”。

（2）代词

Either作为代词时可以指“（两者中的）任一个”（one or the other of two things or people），比如：

(a) There's tea or coffee – you can have either. 有茶和咖啡，你可任选一种。

(b) Could either of you lend me five pounds? 你俩谁能借给我五英镑？

当neither作为代词时可以指“两者都不，两者中无一”，比如：

(a) It was a game in which neither team deserved to win. 那场比赛两个队都不该赢。

(b) Neither of them can cook. 他们俩都不会烹饪。

（3）连词

Either作为连词主要用在either…or…搭配中，用来表示“或者……或者……”（用以引出两个或多个可能的事物）”，比如：

I will eat either chicken or fish tonight. 我今晚吃鱼肉或者鸡肉。

注意在"either A or B"结构中，A和B的词性和结构都要保持一致，比如上面句子中chicken/fish都属于名词。

Neither作为连词主要用在neither…nor…结构中，表示“既不……也不……”，比如：

I will eat neither chicken nor fish tonight. 我今晚既不吃鱼肉，也不吃鸡肉。

注意不能写成neither…or…，要说neither…nor…或者not…or…，比如要表达“我们不知道也不关心他在哪里”，可以有两种说法：

(a) We don't know or care where he is.

(b) We neither know nor care where he is.

（4）副词

当两个单词作为副词时，它们比较容易混淆。当either取副词含义时，它用在否定句中，表示“也（不），亦（不）”，比如：

He did not even say anything to her, and she did not speak to him either.  他甚至一句话也没跟她说，她也没跟他说话。

当neither作为副词时主要用在neither does / can / will etc somebody这样的结构中，比如：

Tom didn't believe a word she said, and neither did the police. 汤姆根本不相信她说的话，警方也不相信。

此外，在美式英语中me neither与me either有时候可以换用，用来表示“我也不……”，比如："I don't feel like going out this evening." "Me neither." 此时Me neither也可以换成Me either
