The Global History of Tea and Today’s Major Tea Industry Issues: A Conversation with Dylan Rothenberg
Wednesday, September 27 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm

Please join us at the Beijing American Center to meet Dylan Rothenberg, an American graduate student researching tea science and sustainable tea cultivation at South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou. Through his PhD work on the sustainable production of Chinese tea, Dylan has spent several years observing international trends in tea consumption, as well as today’s efforts to improve tea industry sustainability.
During the presentation, Dylan will be exploring two broad and fascinating tea-related topics. First, the spread of tea-drinking culture and tradition around the world since its initial discovery in ancient China. Next, we explore the state of tea industry health and sustainability in 2023 – what challenges we must overcome today so that future generations may also enjoy the age-old tradition of tea.
Bio: Dylan has an academic background in Chinese language and culture, however transitioned to researching tea science formally in 2017. He earned a Master’s degree in Tea Science at a Chinese university of agriculture in 2020, and is currently working to complete his doctoral research. His research focuses on organic tea field management practices that promote soil health, reduce environmental impact, and enhance tea plant resilience and crop quality. Outside of the laboratory, Dylan produces videos that invite people around the world to dive into the art and science of tea. Dylan views tea as a way to not only promote human health, but to also foster connection between people and with the natural world.
This event will be conducted in Chinese. Chinese Sign Language interpretation will be provided.
