Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) blue and white porcelain is the original, rarest and most valuable type of blue and white Chinese porcelain, yet it was totally forgotten in China and unknown to the West for over 500 years. Yuan blue and white’s new forms and colorful, painterly decoration were a revolutionary development in the history of Chinese ceramics. The trade in this porcelain ranged from Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia to India, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, and Africa, yet relatively few examples have been found in China itself. Today the largest collections are in former imperial collections at the Purana Qila in Delhi, the Topkapi Sarayi Musei in Istanbul, and at the National Museum of Iran in Teheran (formerly at Ardebil near the Caspian Sea).
Until quite recently, Yuan blue and white porcelain was dated to the Ming dynasty, often the 16th century. There were only a handful of examples in the West. It was only around 1949 that a few researchers identified the characteristics of Yuan blue and white, based on his analysis of the pair of famous vases in the Percival David Collection and the many examples found in the United Kingdom, Istanbul and Teheran.
The design and painting on Yuan blue and white porcelain, so innovative, influential and of an as-yet unequaled level of artistic quality, was made during a quarter century of turmoil, destruction, plague, and oppressive Mongol rule. It blossomed in the middle of this hostile environment and, within a couple of decades, it was gone. Only a couple of hundred intact examples remain today. China would produce great porcelain again, but Yuan blue and white has been unequalled ever since the brief period during which it was made.
Steve Gaskin, who served for over 20 years as President of the Asian Art Society of New England, will provide an appreciation of these wares and practice in connoisseurship. After a guided tour through the history, forms and designs on Yuan blue and white porcelain, he will discuss early research in the West on Yuan blue and white. Then, we will have an exercise session with a series of comparisons of real and fake examples to test audience members’ skills. The tests will range from the easy to the difficult and even debatable.
Nine hundred of Mr. Gaskin’s collection of Yuan blue and white shards were recently donated to the Palace Museum. Steve and his wife Barbara are here in Beijing to meet with scholars from the Palace Museum and celebrate his donation.
