Do you want to learn more about the history of the United States? Join a prominent American historian at the Beijing American Center for a series of informative and engaging talks. 

Session 5: To a More Perfect Union: Shaping the Early American Republic, 1789-1820 

Friday, Mar 17, 2023, 3:00-4:30p.m. 

In this session, we will discuss the achievements and challenges of the new United States government and the major disagreements and compromises that gave birth to the U.S. Constitution and the creation of the Bill of Rights. We'll look at how the debates between George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Adams, and Alexander Hamilton shaped the American political system. We'll also explore the exclusion of Native Americans and African-Americans from citizenship in the new republic and the divisive politics of the 1790s. 

Finally, we'll discuss the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain, which resulted in the burning of the White House. From the early days of the American republic to the tumultuous events of the 19th century, we will cover the highlights but not be afraid also to examine the tough questions from U.S. history. 

This event will be conducted in English.

For security reasons, the BAC staff reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone.
