Dancing with Diplomats – Session 4
Wednesday, February 22nd, 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
The Beijing American Center will feature disco dancing for the last installment of its four-part Dancing with Diplomats series!
The roots of disco can be traced back to the 1970s with a trend that originated in Philadelphia and gave birth to club culture, which promptly exploded in popularity. Latin dances such as samba, cha cha, and tango inspired many popular disco moves. Heavily sequined and exaggerated clothing, flashing multi-colored lights, and energetic, overstated moves characterize the style, whose emphasis on freedom, passion, and disinhibition immediately appealed to young people.
Many of us still have vivid memories of young people in China wearing bell bottoms and toting boomboxes dancing disco in the 1980s. The dance quickly became fashionable as a way to rebel against tradition. Older people later adopted dancing to the modern beat as a way to keep in shape.
