Do you want to learn more about the history of the United States? Join a prominent American historian at the Beijing American Center for a series of informative and engaging talks. 

Session 6: The Market Revolution and American Democracy, 1800-1840 

Friday, Mar 24, 2023, 3:00-4:30p.m. 

The first few decades of the 19th century were a transformative time in American history. This session will consider how the meanings of American freedom changed in this period and how the market revolution affected the lives of workers, women, and African-Americans. We will explore the social bases for a flourishing democracy of the early mid-nineteenth century and the efforts made to strengthen the economic integration of the nation. 

We'll also discuss the significant crises that hindered these efforts, the competing visions of America, and how the growing rift between the states would eventually rip the country apart in the Civil War. 

This event will be conducted in English.

For security reasons, the BAC staff reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone.
