The American Center continues its “American Dreams” series on February 16. Join on the journeys of some of our diplomats who started their American dreams from other countries. Tony Hornik-Tran will tell his story, beginning as a refugee from post-war Vietnam. His father, a principal, and mother, a home economics teacher, gathered their life savings and arranged for the family to go to a free country. In 1982, Tony’s family departed Vietnam on a small fishing boat with 37 other people. Before they left, Tony’s father said, “Education will be the key to your future success. Use it to help yourself and others.” After five days and six nights at sea, they made it to the Philippines. Tony and his family spent 11 months at three different refugee camps, meeting with numerous international non-profit organization workers from all over the world. Tony was deeply touched by these individuals’ generosity, commitment, and dedication, and he promised to come back to help other refugees in need as they had helped him. Now an American, Tony is a U.S. diplomat. Join us to hear Tony's story and to discuss how the concept of the American Dream is understood, realized, or not realized in American society today.
