从美国中餐厅的隐藏菜单到舌尖记忆:一名华裔青年对根的思考
“My Cantonese culture mostly comes through in relationship to understanding my past, and understanding my family, and understanding where I come from and what I’m carrying with me. Even as open as America tries to be, there are still cultural understandings that are different between the average American and my own upbringing. A lot of growing up for me has been coming to terms with those differences.”
The identity construction of each individual is a dynamic process. As we grow up and have more diverse experiences, we keep adding various adjectives to try to define who we are, a simple but complex interrogation. Wherever we go, however, the memory on the tongue always reminds us of our roots, which also constructs the most stubborn part of our identity. People migrate so that different food can meet. People with diverse tastes gather together, to let their food meet, so does their culture. Interestingly, when we reflect on exotic cultures, we can clarify our own cultural image. That’s what the charm of fusion is all about.
