中译英｜黄永玉：人只要笑，就没有输

黄永玉相信古老的中国道理，相信因果，重视情义，讲究礼尚往来、知恩图报，他靠具体的生活经验活着，任何后天学的理念、主义都没有大于这种质朴的人生法则。他这辈子只在吃牛肉的时候喊过万岁，见最高领袖说的是「祝你健康」。直到今天，他骨子里依然活得像百年前的侠客，按照江湖规矩过日子，待朋友赤诚，见长辈谦卑，和三教九流交朋友，佩服有本事的，敬畏有学问的，搭救落难的，只有一种人他不来往，「害我是不行的」，这是闯江湖的底线问题，「我就揍他」。 

再有两个月，黄永玉就要99岁了，该有老人模样了，可他没有。他的画室门口挂了一个拳击沙袋，写作的桌上依次摆着一支钢笔，一叠草稿纸，还有一把匕首。他每天早起画画，中午写作，下午见朋友，晚饭后窝进沙发里，抱着一只小猫，看电视上的拳击比赛。

Huang Yongyu believed in ancient Chinese wisdom: karma, brotherhood, courtesy that demands reciprocity, and gratitude. He lived by tangible experiences, considering them more precious than any philosophies he may learn. He exclaimed “hooray” only when eating beef and greeted the country’s top leader with “wish you good health.” Remaining true to the spirit of an ancient adventurer, he adhered to the principles of the martial world, treating friends with utmost sincerity, displaying humility towards elders, and forging connections with individuals from all walks of life. He held deep admiration for geniuses, respected the knowledgeable, and readily extended a helping hand to those in need. However, there was one type of person with whom he refused to associate: those who bring harm to others. “Don’t hurt me,” that’s the bottom line, he declared, “or I’ll flatten them when they come.” 

In a mere two months, Huang Yongyu would celebrate his 99th birthday, yet he defied all expectations of what an old man should look like. Upon his studio door hung a punching bag, and on his writing desk were a pen, a stack of manuscript papers and even a dagger. Each day, he rose early to paint, wrote at midday, and met some friends in the afternoon. After dinner, he reclined on the couch cradling his kitten and enjoyed boxing matches on TV.
